According to an article in the Guardian today (it's great having my surface pro just spoon feeding me news like this!!) City have offered 31 year old Arsenal full back Bacary Sagna a three year deal. I understand that his contract is not being renewed in the summer.
My impression of the guy is that he is a strong, reasonably pacey full back who has never set the world on fire. At 31, in my opinion, he is probably too long in the tooth to be considered.
Whilst I trust MP's judgement on bringing players in (his track record is quite good so far) I cannot see a place for Sagna in the starting line up so my guess is he would be a squad player if he did come to the club.
I would actually prefer it if we took a punt on youth though. Scum were so successful for so long by bringing in younger players (ok, some of them got sold on but look at Drug Test Dodger and Fatty... then they bought that skinny runt of a goalkeeper who is actually not too bad and eventually Jones and Smalling will turn into decent players). That, I believe, should be our blueprint. What happened to our interest in that useful looking left back who plays for Southampton? And he's English. And he should start in the England team ahead of golden oldie Cole and Baines (poor Baines... gotta feel for the guy but some players just get caught between generations).
What is everyone else's opinion on Baccy? Is he smoking hot or just cold ash?

I heard that he is a replacement for Micah Richards as the physio's have deemed him as too injury prone. As for selling an English player, maybe that means that there is something in the pipeline for Luke Shaw/Ross Barkley in the summer. I also think that Pellegrini wants a solid no.2 with a view to bringing a youth player through in the next 2 years without having to throw him in at the deep end should Zaba get inured (highly unlikely).
It's finished at Sunderland, Manchester United have done all they can. The Rooney goal was enough for the 3 points. Manchester City are still alive here, Balotelli, Agueroooooooo! I swear you'll never see anything like this again. So watch it, drink it in! They've just heard the news at the Stadium of Light. Two goals in added time, for Manchester City, to snatch the title away from Manchester United. STUPENDOUS! |

Barkley (or is is Barclay as in the bank??!!) interests me but he's a long way off the City first team at present. If he has any sense and is being advised properly, he will stay at Everton for at least another two seasons under Roberto Martinez. RM has handled him (and Lukaku) excellently this season, dropping both players for a few games as they are young and look how well they have come back. Martinez should be the next City and England manager - look what he's done with the crappy team that Moyes built. We definitely don't want this guy heading to Old Trafford! Of course, there's no problem with us buying Barkley and then loaning him back out but I personally don't think that should be allowed... this would stop the richer clubs such as ourselves and Chelski stockpiling talent just so that other clubs can't get hold of them
As for Shaw, yep, I'd take him in a heartbeat. I'm not a massive fan of his mate Lallana though I can see what the fuss is about but that one needs to convince me but he's still a better bet than Wilshere who seems to go down clutching that sickly ankle at least twice every game and as Paul Scholes observed, he hasn't progressed since he was about 17. I don't think his tactical nous has improved and that's the only way he'll ever improve now. I feel sorry for him as I'm sat here nursing my poorly ankle myself - he'll suffer when he's older - it doesn't look good - they've just patched the lad up as best they can.

Awhile back, maybe a year and a half ago? I was just surfing around "lists" of the worlds best players at various positions. At right back Bacary Sagna made every list of top tens. I honestly never paid him that much attention to think of him in those terms and nothing more than admiring him as being solid and not mistake prone. Would I take him over Richards right now? Of course. Richards is injury ridden and unfortunately for how good he could be I think what we've seen lately indicates that he has run his course here in terms of all games are far too important for us to coddle a player. Would Sagna come here to play second fiddle? Maybe. Might he be preferred by MP? Maybe, who knows. I do know that playing for a team with more potential than where your at for fantastic wages might sway your brain for any role on a team, would BS accept that? I like Zab as stated above but this is a good topic and I too would welcome insight from others who might be more in tune with Sagna.

Baccy had a good game today and I think "solid" describes him very well. He's more of a physical presence than Zab but for me, Zabs is the best RB in the league and has been for some time. At 31, Baccy is not a long term prospect but I'd not be against him joining the club. I need to correct what I said above. Apparently he has decided not to sign a contract at the gooners and it's not a case of him having not been offered a new contract.
As for Micah, I think we saw the best of him several years ago and his injury problems have not helped his development. He cannot be considered more than a squad player at best and my bet is that if a reasonable offer came in for him (4 million plus) then he could be moved on in the summer. I'm not even certain that RB is his best position. He's been a decent servant for the club but in my view he probably needs to move on to kick start his career, at a club where he will be a regular starter.
